The almighty WebTOONS has done a rather smart move. They bought the storytelling platform called Wattpad. Both of these platforms are free to use and make their money by posting advertisement on the website. Wattpad is for webnovels and fanfiction while WebTOONS is for visual content, like manga, manhwa and comic books.
WebTOONS was created by the same company that made LINE, the chat app. The company is called Naver. Wattpad said that they are still going to run independently but will be owned by Naver. Together they have a total of 160 million monthly visitors.
Before WebTOONs many comic book authors would self publish their comics online for free on their website. They would make a small living by posting advertisement. However, once WebTOON came into play, it became the go to place for all creators to gather and post their comics and manga. It was a great idea because now many readers would find them and the platform was free to use.
This is a good business move and since the company is from South Korea, we wont have to worry about censorship or SJW trying to change things that they dont like. Its not like the SONY deal that has people worried that anime is going to be more and more censored with so many westerners trying to control anime.
